Breaking their long-standing creative partnership with producer Prince Paul, De La Soul’s fourth studio album ‘Stakes Is High’, released in 1996, took on the commercialisation of hip-hop and the problematic nature of gangsta rap among other topics. Featuring production work from J Dilla and guest spots from future stars Mos Def and Common, it received a muted commercial response but garnered great reviews and has aged well.
